Leave of Absence, Certificated POLICY NO: 449

The board of trustees shall have power to grant leaves of absence of up to one year in length, with possible renewal, to personnel covered by renewable contract. Such leave may be granted in cases of pregnancy, illness, or injury of the employee or of a member of the employee's immediate family, or for purposes of education or travel of the employee, or for other special reasons which the board may find appropriate.

When an employee is granted leave of absence, the district assures that upon return from such leave, the employee shall be guaranteed the same position held prior to the commencement of the leave providing the position has not been eliminated. The employee shall be offered a contract and shall have ten (10) days to accept or reject the offered contract.

When such leave of absence is granted:

  1. The employee retains his/her continuing contract status.
  2. The employee retains previously earned and credited experience steps but does not receive experience credit for the period of leave of absence.
  3. The employee retains, but does not add to, accumulated sick leave.
  4. When permitted under provisions of the insurance policy in force at the time, the employee may retain group coverage by assuming the total cost of premiums.
  5. The employee shall remain on the Reduction in Force list and shall be subject to the consequences of the enforcement of the R.I.F. policy in the same manner as an employee who had not been on leave of absence.

When an employee accepts leave of absence, he/she assures that he/she intends to return to district employment.
