Spybot: (Also on
\\dsrv\downloads)
Google Toolbar http://toolbar.google.com/
Load the latest SP for XP:
Windows XP Support pack 2
(Warning a BIG download.....if you are on the KMS/SES/DOff Lan in the
\\dsrv\downloads directory, you can get the file without downloading)
If you don't have XP or would prefer to stay
away from SP2 for xp. Here's another choice. Zone Alarm works probably the
best and has one of the easiest interfaces. It gives lots of warnings but
tends to work well (conservatively well but well)
I am assuming that you have a current copy of the Symantec/Norton AV on your
laptop (today's dat file is dated the 16th and is the most current)
If your computer has already started showing symptoms of spyware, you may
have to load and use ad-aware as well as spybot. (even though the two
programs don't always like one another) We had a number of computers that
were infected earlier this year and while spybot is fantastic in preventing
and catching spyware, a few types seem to need both spybot and adaware to
cure. A sad note is that this type of infection appears to be getting more
and more aggressive and preventive measures and cures more difficult. While
I was in Lewiston for training the techs finally gave up on several of the
computers in one the MS Labs we were using and just reformatted and
reinstalled from scratch.
Here's a site for the free ad-adware download.
I'm sending you this information even though you may want to wait until we
get together to do this with assistance. But I figured that a few of you
might feel technically competant to go ahead on your own. Please wait to
load XP SP2 until we get a chance to find out if it's going to affect eSIS
on your primary workstation.
