Here are the steps to giving your computer a mini-overhaul:
- Check the disk for file allocation errors (aks Chkdsk)
- Easy way to do this is to open my computer,
- Find the C drive
- Right click
- Select properties
- Select tools
- Click check now
- Select both boxes and click start
- This wont work until you actually reboot. Figure a
good half hour or longer for this process )
- Use Disk Clean up to remove temporary files
- This is now a program in the system tools directory.
(All programs, accessories, system tools)
- Just let it run (it will take a while to process) and
it will offer to remove temporary internet files, installation
leftovers, etc.
- Dont let it compact filesIt shouldnt offer but it
will be listed as a choice.
- Use Defrag to consolidate files (this may both speed up
your computer and prevent some disk errors)
- Available both in system tools (All programs,
accessories, system tools) and from the tools menu you used in the
chkdsk process.
- Just let it run by clicking defrag
This process should be run every semester or more often if you have an older
computer or are adding, deleting a lot of files, or experiencing random errors.
