Employment

Can I get class credit for working?

Students who are currently employed may earn credit for Individualized Occupation Training(IOT)/Work Experience if they meet the criteria outlined in the Training Agreement. Once the student, employer, parent/guardian and School to Work Coordinator sign the Agreement the student will be eligible to receive credit.

Am I eligible for credit if I work after school and on weekends?

You sure are. You don't need a work release to have a Training Agreement, but you still need to meet all the criteria outlined in the Agreement in order to earn the credit.

I don't need the credit, why should I do this?

If you want to just get by with the minimum requirements then you probably won't be motivated to earn the school credit. But if you want more than just the credit, you'll get more out of it. You can use this experience to help yourself. You will make contacts in the world of work (networking), learn valuable work skills that will transfer to any career and unique work skills that are job specific, discover if a particular career is for you, make money, develop critical thinking skills, understand the type of education and training necessary to become a skilled worker in a certain career, and meet new people. You may even begin to understand why you are going to school!

How will I be evaluated?

Up to four times a semester, a STW coordinator will meet with your employer and conduct an evaluation based on your Training Plan. Each student is started out with a generic Training Plan. As you enter your second semester of IOT/Work Experience your Training Plan will become more detailed and job specific according to your employer's needs. You will receive a copy of each evaluation.

How do I get a Training Agreement?

You can sign up at the beginning of each semester by contacting your school counselor or School to Work Coordinator.

Job Shadowing

What is a Job Shadow?

Job Shadowing involves observing one or more people while they work at their job. The goal of a student job shadowing will be to learn as much as possible by observing, listening, asking good questions, and taking notes. We will help students prepare for their job shadow, but they will have to fulfill their responsibilities. The job shadow will be at least three hours and can last all day, or be scheduled over a series of days if appropriate.

Why should students participate?

Job shadowing gives students a chance to learn about what someone actually does in a job that is of interest to them. Job shadows will provide students with an opportunity to see firsthand the variety of jobs that exist within the six Idaho Career Pathways (Arts and Communications, Business and Management, Health Services, Human Resources, Industrial and Engineering, Natural Resources).

We have formed partnerships with many companies that make their employees available to Silver Valley students for job shadow experiences. These employees are interested in sharing information about their jobs and the education/training necessary for the students to realize their career goals.

Some good reasons to job shadow:

  1. The chance to observe what really goes on in the workplace.
  2. Opportunity to travel to another part of the valley, or even out of the valley.
  3. Explore a career in which you may have an interest.
  4. Meet interesting people who may help you with future employment. Networking!
  5. Understand what education and training will be needed to get the job of your dreams.
  6. Learn that the process to finding work after school starts with career exploration.
  7. It will be fun!
